Homemade Train Table
Want to have a homemade train table and don’t know where to start? Never fear, homemade train tables are actually pretty simple constructions, even for the uninitiated handyperson.
The first job you have if you are planning to have a homemade train table is to check out what kind of space you have to put it into. Measure the space, so that you know what will fit there. It is also pretty smart thinking to consider where your electrical sockets are so that you don’t fit your brand spanking new train table into place only to find you have to call the electrician.
Next decide what type of table legs you want, you can construct them out of 2 X 4 if you wish, or buy ready made ones from the hardware store. Generally the table legs need to be about 28” long, but they can be taller or shorter than this if you need them to be. There are different styles of table legs, so before you buy them think about the overall “look” that you want from your home made train table.
While you are at the hardware store checking out your table legs, pick up a sheet of half inch plywood. With your dimensions make a plan of your train table. When you get home simply measure and cut the dimensions for the train table surface. You will also need to measure for an apron, which will strengthen the table and create a “mounting point” to which you can attach braces to the table legs.
Drywall screws are the best options to go with when putting your homemade train table together. These are far less complicated and faster to use than some other types available. Applying wood glue into the screwed areas and joins will also give the train table more strength. There are homemade train table plans that include drawers, but unless you have tried your hand at carpentry before it is best to leave these to the semi-experts.
Once you have fitted your homemade train table into place you can carve out the cable holes exactly where you need them placed. Finally you can either varnish or paint the home made train table according to your requirements. If you want the table to blend into a landscape background then a dark green is the best option. If you are building the train table for a child who is fanatical about Thomas the Tank Engine then the royal blue color will fit the theme best.
